More adults are straightening their teeth than ever, and not only for the look of it. Well-aligned teeth can be easier to keep clean, kinder to your bite and a real lift to how you feel. Here's what orthodontics can do for you, whatever your age.
Most people come to us about the way their smile looks. Many leave surprised by how much else changes.
Crowded and overlapping teeth create tight corners your toothbrush and floss can't reach. Line them up and everyday cleaning gets easier, which helps protect your gums.
When teeth don't meet as they should, some take more than their share of the load. Orthodontics can bring your bite back into balance, so chewing feels natural again.
Teeth that meet at the wrong angle can chip, wear flat or become sensitive over time. Moving them into a better position can ease that strain on your teeth and jaw.
Our patients often tell us they've stopped covering their mouth when they laugh. That's a change you feel every day.
Orthodontics often plays a quiet but important part in bigger dental plans. We work with your own dentist or our in-house dental team, so every part of your treatment fits together.
Restorations look and last best when the teeth around them are in the right position. Lining teeth up first can mean less needs to be done to them, and gives your dentist the space and angles they need for a natural-looking result.
After a tooth is lost, its neighbours rarely stay put. They often tilt or drift into the space, and the tooth opposite can start to grow towards it. Over time the gap closes up in all the wrong ways, which can make the missing tooth harder to replace and throw your bite out. Orthodontics can move those teeth back upright, so the space can be restored properly or closed neatly, and your bite works as it should.
There's no single best brace for every adult. The right choice depends on how your teeth need to move, how your bite works and the way you live. These are the options we offer.
A series of clear, removable trays that move your teeth gradually, step by step. Most people won't notice you're wearing them, and you take them out to eat and brush. Every Invisalign plan we offer is comprehensive, planned for the full result rather than a quick fix, and your progress can be checked remotely, so you need fewer trips to the practice.
Fixed braces with tooth-coloured brackets that blend in with your teeth. A good fit if you need the precise control of fixed braces but would rather they stayed discreet.
The most established way to straighten teeth, and still one of the most predictable for complex movements. Far smaller and neater than many people remember.
Fixed braces with a warm gold or champagne finish, for adults who'd rather their braces were a statement than something to hide.
Not sure which suits you? That's exactly what your consultation is for.
REQUEST YOUR CONSULTATIONA lot of what people believe about braces dates back to their school days. Here are the myths we hear most, and the facts behind them. Tap a myth to see the fact.
Moving adult teeth isn't the same as moving a teenager's. Your bone is denser, so teeth respond more gradually. You may have fillings, crowns or bridges to work around, gums that have changed over the years, or gaps where teeth are missing. Each of these shapes what's possible, and how your treatment should be planned.
That's why every adult treatment plan at The Oakwood Clinic is made by a consultant orthodontist. Your assessment is thorough, and your plan is built around your whole mouth, not just the teeth you can see.
Paroo is a GDC-registered specialist in orthodontics and a hospital consultant, where she treats some of the most complex cases in the area. She teaches and supervises orthodontists and postgraduate students, and has been a judge at the Dental Awards for 18 years. The Oakwood Clinic is her family's practice, and her approach is simple: treat every patient as if they were the only one.
Sarah is also a GDC-registered specialist and hospital consultant orthodontist, bringing the same depth of training to every plan she makes.
Between them, our orthodontists have more than 15 years of experience and have straightened over 1,000 smiles.
REQUEST YOUR CONSULTATIONYou don't need to know what you want before you come in. Your consultation is a chance to explore, ask every question you have and understand your options. Nobody will ask you to decide on the day, and going away to think it over is completely normal.
A relaxed first chat about what you'd like to change. We'll take photos and a 3D digital scan of your teeth, with no messy moulds, talk through the options and answer your questions. Our orthodontist then reviews your records and can send you a short personal video explaining what treatment could look like for you.
Go straight to the specialist. Your orthodontist will talk through your medical history and what you'd like to change, carry out a full examination including your gums, and take X-rays, a 3D scan and photos. You'll leave with personalised options and honest advice, and your plan follows in writing.
We're open until 7pm on Wednesdays, a 5-minute walk from Oakwood station on the Piccadilly line, with free street parking outside 2pm to 3pm.
REQUEST YOUR CONSULTATIONNo. There's no upper age limit. If your teeth and gums are healthy, they can be moved, and we'll check this carefully at your consultation.
It depends on what needs to change. Small corrections to the front teeth can take as little as six months, while more complex cases take longer. Adult teeth can move a little more gradually, and we'd always rather take the time to get it right than rush. You'll have an estimated timeline before you start.
Most people feel some aching or tenderness for a few days when treatment starts and after adjustments. It usually settles quickly, and your usual pain relief helps if needed. Fitting braces doesn't need an injection.
No. You can contact us directly. If you already have a dentist, we're happy to work alongside them.
It can be. You can choose a free consultation with our treatment coordinator, or go straight to a consultation with one of our consultant orthodontists. We'll explain both when we call you.
Often, yes. Crowns and bridges can usually be worked around, and implants are planned around because they don't move. Gums need to be healthy and stable before teeth are moved, so we check them first and can arrange care with our hygienist if needed.
Yes. Teeth keep moving naturally throughout life, so a retainer is what keeps your new smile in place. We'll plan your retention with you from the start, and retainer checks can be done in the practice, by phone or by video call.
Whether you've wondered about your teeth for years or noticed them changing more recently, the first step is simply a conversation. Request your consultation and we'll call you to find a time that suits.
